I heard the word schnitzel a million times within the first few days of living in Vienna, and I was never quite sure what it was. A schnitzel is a thin slice of meat, usually chicken, that’s fried in breadcrumbs. So it’s basically breaded chicken.
Here’s a classic Wiener schnitzel from a restaurant called ‘XXL- Restaurant Leopoldauer Alm‘ in Vienna. The restaurant was great, and the waitress we had made it an unforgettable experience. Lol, she teased me for only eating a quarter of the whole thing. I mean, it was HUGE!
They’re usually not this big, but the name of the restaurant explains the size. Schnitzels are also pretty good, but it’s easy to get tired of the taste…especially since there’s a schnitzelhaus at almost every street corner. In Vienna, they’re as popular as the Wafflehouses in America.
